Elephant hide paper is not made from elephants but is highly sought after by many top folders. It is slightly thicker than standard origami paper, so it is better suited to more stylised designs that have no multi-layered points.
It allows you to make more solid constructions and is also suitable for a technique known as “wet-folding”, where you dampen the paper before folding, then let it dry to a solid form when finished. This allows you to curve the paper in subtle ways and to have them stay in place. This is ideal for an model that you wish to exhibit over a period of time.
